This Week/End in the YaY! Area through May 12

This Week/End in the YaY! Area through May 12

The Bay Area is on and poppin' this weekend with a plethora of events for you to enjoy.

Check out the schedule of events for some of the hottest spots to see and be seen in the YaY! Area. Pick one or pick many and trust that you will have a fabulous time!

A quick note from me to you: On Tuesday night, an Oakland landmark, Merritt Bakery, was severely damaged in a fire.  Merritt Bakery has always held a special place in my heart.  I was taken there by a friend of mine in April 2008 during my first visit to Oakland (before I lived here). It was love at first bite.  I have been to this spot dozens upon dozens of times. I always ordered the Chicken and Waffles, the waitresses there knew me on sight, the rest of the staff always greeted me with a warm smile. And their cakes, well, they were simply divine.

It was the place where I have taken lovers, friends, business associates and people visiting from out of town  It has served as my own personal landmark. Many great conversations, dreams that are now realities and ideas that have become movements were born out of Merritt Bakery's half circle booths. I happy that no one was hurt in the blaze and I wish the owners of Merritt Bakery a speedy return to business.

ALEX PINTO GROUP
DUENDE

Guitarist/composer Alex Pinto embodies jazz’s international reach, with a sinewy sound steeped in North Indian classical music, rock and exploratory post-bop forms. His debut CD, "Inner State," announces the arrival of a musician brimming with stimulating ideas, an artist who also possesses an essential gift for bringing fellow players into his singular vision. Rather than flaunting his abundant technique, Pinto makes a powerful first impression with his fluid phrasing, bright tone and a program of seven original compositions marked by engaging melodies and unorthodox harmonic forms.

Featuring tenor saxophonist Jon Armstrong and bassist Dave Tranchina, stellar musicians based in Los Angeles who bonded with Pinto while they were all studying at California Institute for the Arts in Valencia, the album captures the excitement of young artists embarking on an extended journey. Holding the session together is San Francisco–raised drummer Jaz Sawyer, who returned to the Bay Area in 2009 after a decade in New York City backing luminaries like Abbey Lincoln, Wynton Marsalis, Irvin Mayfield and Jacky Terrasson.

YOSHI'S

PST LIVE! featuring DJ QUESTLOVE

The second installment of the PST Live! 2013 Spring Series, we are excited to welcome back a man who is perhaps the premier living musicologist - Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson.

As drummer, producer and anchor of the world-renowned Roots crew, Questlove had already established himself as a key figure in urban music when he formed the mythical Soulquarians with fellow musical icons J Dilla, James Poyser, D'Angelo, Erykah Badu, Q-Tip and others. This loose collective went on to shape the sound of neo-soul and East Coast hip-hop through J Dilla's untimely death in 2006.

With continued success and growth for the Roots, including installment as house band on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon," Questlove has established himself as one of the most in-demand DJs currently working. His DJ sets around the world have been notable for not only their unique ability to buck musical trends and Clear Channel playlists, but their unrivaled ability to bring out the best, brightest and most famous guests. A Questlove gig is not only a place to experience music at its best, but a place to see and be seen.

SF's own Sake One (founder of PST) will set the table for a musical feast that will leave you both stuffed, and hungry for more. This will be a rare opportunity to experience world-class DJs playing incredible music in an intimate environment, in the heart of San Francisco's Western Addition.
