Oakland Local: hiring interns for 2013

Oakland Local is seeking interns to work on projects with our fundraising and editorial teams in 2013. We are interviewing now and hiring for a January 15th, 2013 start. In particular, we're looking for the following

Investigative reporting intern: Work with a skilled and experience reporting team (former Mercury News, Oakland Tribune, Orange Count Register) on a project that involves FOIAs, data visualization, and deep analysis of local news.  MUST be free during the day to visit government institutions, libraries etc. Detail-oriented, news-driven personality with research interests/skills preferred. Prefer you have own computer/laptop. 15 hours week.

Development/fundraising intern:  Work with experience fundraising and development director on grants, programs and fundraising to make Oakland Local more sustainable. Good research skills, interest in building proficiency in field required.Prefer you have own computer/laptop. 15 hours week.

These positions pay a stipend of $300 a month and require presence at the Oakland Local co-working space for meetings during the week. We require a 2 week tryout in January as part of the selection process. Internships run for 3 months, 'til April 1st,  and can be renewed through June 2013.

Note that this is a working role: Interns must successfully fulfill their commitments to continue in the program and be paid every month.

About Susan Mernit

Susan Mernit is the co-founder of Oakland Local. She is also a circuit rider for The Community Information Challenge, a program of The John S and James L Knight Foundation, a popular speaker and facilitator, and a consultant to media, non-profit and community organizations. Susan lives in North Oakland with a rescue dog named Cazzie, a little dog named Violet, a fat grey cat named Gracie, a very cool housemate, and a yard in serious need of soil remediation. She is an aspiring gardener, a long-time blogger & entrepreneur, and a recovering journalist who's found home in Oakland.
