Phat Beets Newsletter: September 2011

Phat Beets Produce spent the summer pounding the pavement, telling neighbors about our programs and inviting them to join our Community Committees to help shape the future of local food access. We are now taking applications for both our Farmers' Market and Healthy Hearts Youth Market Garden Committee. Email for more info.

We were excited to complete our first youth summer garden based food justice internship with six teenagers from the Healthy Hearts Obesity Prevention Clinic at Children's Hospital Oakland.  Click here to watch a video from the summer and meet our knowledgable teens.

Finally we are asking our supporters to make a $5+ contribution towards our Indigenous People's Day Celebration: Decolonize Your Diet on Oct 8th, 2011 at our Saturday North Oakland Farmers' Market.  This is alternative celebration to Columbus Day.  We are trying to raise $500 to put on a day of free hip hop, poetry, art, cooking demos and a culinary colonialism workshop at the market.  We want to make sure we can pay all the people on the ground, on the mic, and behind the brush combating 400 years of miseducation to our young people.  Please contribute your $5+ here.

Looking for Office Space

Phat Beets is looking for some office space to use for 6-12 months.  We don't need much, just enough space for a desk with computer and storage for a refrigerator, and a bike cart.  Let us know if you have a small amount of space to share with us. We can help pitch in for electricity, but being an all volunteer run, non-profit we don't have the budget to pay rent. Please email if you can help us out.

Youth Farm Stand at SMDP

We are opening our youth operated farm stand again at St Martin De Porres Elementary starting Wed, Sep 21.  The stand operates every Weds from 2-6pm in the parking lot of SMDP Elementary on 40th st in between West and MLK.

...connecting small farmers to urban communities

Phat Beets' mission is to provide equal, affordable access to organic fresh fruits and vegetables, grains and legumes to North Oakland families through wholesale pricing. Supported by community events, Phat Beets facilitates youth in leadership roles engaging their peers in healthy eating and nutrition discussions through fruit and vegetable sampling. Phat Beets works to connect small farmers to urban communities via the creation of farm stands and farmers markets in local establishments.
