Ebb + Flow 2013 - The 2nd annual Mills Dance Alumni Concert

Mills Dance Alumni Association & Mills College Dance Department proudly present Ebb + Flow 2013. With groundbreaking choreographers graduating from Mills College and emerging in the local and national dance scenes, it is impossible to ignore Mills' ability to remain fresh and cutting-edge over so many years. This concert honors such experimentation with 7 dynamic choreographers.

Caroline Kappel (MFA 1999) flies in from Ohio with her collaborating dancers and musicians to serve up a movement, music, performance art installation featuring bizarre pairings of vegetables and turntables.

Nzinga Woods' (MFA 2011) potent solo fuses both modern and traditional movements to celebrate the sensibilities of the masculine and trickster-like characteristics visible in African American culture.

Local powerhouse choreographer Dana Lawton (MFA 1997) offers a taste of her larger new ensemble work, investigating memory, both individual and collective.

Premiering a new group piece, Rebecca Wilson (MFA 2007) explores the movement, images, words, sounds and shapes gathered from experiencing the Man Ray & Lee Miller exhibit at SF's Legion of Honor.

Daria Kaufman (MFA 2008) performs a dance theater solo entitled "Superflat" that portrays a fictional, one-dimensional character cast into a 3-dimensional world.

Pamela Wunderlich (MA 1976) pays homage to German expressionistic choreographer Pina Bausch in "Una Pieza Para Pina," a massive group work.

The evening culminates with Cuauhtemoc Peranda's (MFA 2012) site-specific solo, which draws from traditional tribal powwows, performative vogue culture, contemporary dance and the on-the-edge improvisations of butoh. Peranda's work pays tribute to dance of the ancient past, exploratory present and mysterious future, and is the quintessence of what Ebb + Flow celebrates.

Relish in the unique, inventive and diverse offerings Mills Dance Alumni from the classes of 1976 through 2012 share at this one-night-only performance.
