Cecil Brown and Kimberly Bryant, Black Girls Code
Oakland-based artist Bill Hammond and local figure Donald Lacy, Jr. recently held the Urban Games Suite. In association with San Francisco Black Film Festival, the two brought together famed cartoonist Morrie Turner and animator Leo D. Sullivan - the two most veteran African-American cartoonist and animators living today for this event.
Professor Brown and an Oakland teacher at conference
The best part of the DML Conference (Digital Media Learning) that took place earlier this month (March 1-3) was meeting new people. The new people I most liked meeting were the people who were very few in number: black people. I don’t know why there were so few of them, but when you did see one, your eyes popped out.

God could not have sent us a more fitting setting for Occupy Cal at the University of California, Berkeley, as the sun rising, yellow and warm. I was going devote today to observing and reporting on the social movement Occupy Cal.

In an effort to bridge the gap between American culture and the new democracy in Tunisia, where the Arab spring begun, the U.S. Justice Department contacted the Remarkable Current record label to invite hip-hop artists to tour Tunisia and Algeria as part of a program called Hip Hop Ambassadors.
Wanda Johnson and Sophina Mesa
It was 10 a.m. last week when I left Berkeley for Hayward to meet Oscar Grant’s family. Cephus Johnson, Oscar’s uncle, had invited me to his mother’s house where I could observe the Channel 2 TV crew that was making a show about the family.
Before Oscar Grant's murder almost two years ago, the video camera on a cell phone was simply a novelty.
This incident showed how it could be used as evidence of wrongdoing - and that justice was hiding in technology.
“The cell phone brought him justice,” Cephus Johnson, Oscar Grant’s uncle told me recently. He was referring to the historic event in which caused a jury to convicted then-BART Officer Johannes Mehserle, 28, of murder of Oscar Grant.
Rev. Jetemiah A. Wright and author Cecil Brown
When I went to see Rev. Doc Reverend A.Wright, Sunday at Grand Avenue Seventh Day Adventist Church, Oakland, I thought I would be revisiting my angry feelings against him during the Obama Campaign. Like many African Americans, I was angry with Reverend Wright because it looked like he was going to derail Obama’s triumph.
Too Short & Cecil Brown at Art Soul
Anybody who attended last Sunday’s Art and Soul Festival, in Oakland’s Downtown, will remember this scene: MC Curry is prancing around on stage, and the audience is in a state of euphoria. Balloons are floating, children running; young women and flaunting, young brothers are flossing.

MC Hammer put on a dynamite performance Saturday at the 10th Annual Art & Soul Festival in downtown Oakland - surrounded by a sea of hometown admirers.
