District 3 Councilwoman Nancy Nadel is convening a public workshop to generate ideas for creative utilization of under-freeway “airspace.”
This airspace workshop will focus on underutilized lots under and adjacent to freeways in West Oakland. These leasable spaces are managed by the California Department of Transportation; and Caltrans staff will provide information on the leasing guidelines and process. The workshop also will include discussion on zoning and use restrictions for these lots.
“I am pleased to invite all the creative, entrepreneurial energy in District 3 to spark ideas for exciting new uses of the 54 leasable acres of Caltrans under-freeway airspace in West Oakland,” Nadel said.
Jocelyn Combs from the city of Oakland Public Works Department said, “These areas become blighted in part because they have no active uses or value. Once they are embraced by the community, that will change.”
