On Friday morning at 5:36 a.m.,  Jesus "Chuy" Campos was shot outside the 39th Avenue service entrance to Otaez Mexicatessen - a restaurant on International Boulevard that he and his wife opened 25 years ago.

We want to share this statement from City Council member Ignacio de la Fuente, who knew the slain man well:

"It is with great sadness today that I share with you news of the tragic and senseless death of Jesus “Chuy” Campos, prominent Fruitvale merchant and owner of the famous Otaez Restaurant in Oakland’s Fruitvale District.

Chuy was one of the original pioneers in the Fruitvale District, having opened his restaurant 25 years ago, he was not only a successful businessman, but was also a well respected member of the Fruitvale Community. 

"Over the years, he gave back to the Fruitvale community in many ways. Having served as the president of the Fruitvale Merchants Association for a number of years, he was a true leader in our community, this is a tragic loss."
