After all the fireworks of the last two weeks, you might find yourself craving some sun, sky and quiet.

Thankfully, July is National Recreation and Parks month. The East Bay is home to some amazing parks - courtesy of the city, county/regional and state parks systems - and several of them are celebrating important anniversaries this year.

It is the 100th Anniversary of the Oakland Parks and Recreation Department. In celebration, the city is featuring a series of Open Houses at almost every site. They're also hosting several free family events - such as "Dive-In" nights at many city pools. If you want to support the work of the parks department, you even can attend a fundraiser/benefit July 23 at the Dunsmuir Hellam Historic Estate.

Many folks who've grown up in Oakland have fond memories of going to Ardenwood in Fremont to pick up a Halloween Pumpkin. This year marks the year-round working farm/park/educational center's 25th anniversary.

If the beach is calling your name, another East Bay Regional Park celebrating this month is the Crab Cove Visitor Center in Alameda. It's also the 75th anniversary of the East Bay Regional Parks.

Just a short ferry ride away from Oakland, California State Park Angel Island is where many Oakland parents and grandparents entered the U.S. So it's only fitting that they had a series of activities to celebrate their 100th anniversary earlier this year. Also, Mount Diablo in Contra Costa County has long been a favorite for local hikers.

In short, there's so many ways to celebrate National Parks and Recreation Month; you might just need a map to help you navigate the choices. Fortunately, Oakland Local has put one together for you.
