Oakland to shine at 11th Annual MLK Tribute - In the Name of Love (Community Voices)

Martin Luther King, honored at LivingJazz's annual tribute concert

Martin Luther King, honored at LivingJazz's annual tribute concert

For the past 10 years, Oakland has brought together people of all ages, races and ethnicities in celebration  not only the inspiring legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. but to give homage to the unique diversity of the city and to bring focus to all things good and positive within it.

Plagued by gun violence, high drop rates, foreclosures and a slow recovery from the economic downturn of the recent past, Oakland will again applaud those that work tirelessly in the trenches, in spite of, to bring about progressive, positive changes in our homes, our schools, communities and neighborhoods.   In The Name of Love – a tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr. is about the history of the civil rights movement.  It is about the legacy of “love for one another” that Martin Luther King, Jr. preached, taught and demonstrated in every rally and freedom march so that we may all enjoy the freedoms we enjoy today.

Marking the eleventh year, “In the Name of Love” will showcase local talent, shine a spotlight on our children in the Oakland public school system and present the “Oakland Citizen Humanitarian Award”.

Musical selections will be given by returning guests, the foot stompin’ Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir, the joyful Oakland Children’s Community Choir, and the ever popular Oaktown Jazz Workshops. The evening will also include archival footage of Dr. King making this tribute a moving celebration of civil rights.

6:00 PM Pre-concert Event: The Oakland Community Exhibition, showcasing non-profits and businesses doing great work in our local community.

The 2013 Featured Artists include two time Grammy Award and a Tony Award winner, the great Jennifer Holiday.  Her rich vocals have won numerous accolades internationally particularly for her amazing performance as Effie in “Dreamgirls” in which she sang an unforgettable rendition of, “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going.”

Also, on hand, the smooth vocal/guitar jazz duo, Tuck & Patti, a mainstay for jazz buffs and lovers of great music.  Performing together for 34 years and married for 31 they bring to the stage a wealth of talent that has yet to waver from their credo: “It’s not done if it’s not from the heart. And what comes from the heart demands excellence”.

Each year audience members leave with a renewed sense of community and inspired to make a difference the MLK way:  In the Name of Love.
