Hundreds of revelers celebrated the
Centennial of women's suffrage in
Lakeside Park on October 2, 2011.
The event --which was sponsored by the
Alameda County Historical Association
and the League of Women Voters --featured
speeches from a host of local politicos
, followed by a parade that made a long
loop from the bandstand up to Grand
Avenue and then up through the McElroy
Fountain which is also celebrating its
centennial.
Oakland is not only the city that hosted the state's first suffragist march in 1908, it currently has a female Mayor, six female City Council members, a female City Attorney and City Auditor, and a female congressperson.
