Grind for the Green Fest, 2009 by Steve Rhodes
For anyone and everyone with an appreciation for the green hip hop movement, Saturday's Fresh Fest
is a don't miss A packed half day of music and events to be held on
August 14th from noon to 6 pm at Oakland's pretty Mosswood Park, Fresh Fest has an amazing group of organizers and promoters- TEDX speaker and Grind for the Green Co-founder Zakiya Harris, and her super youth crew of Ashoka Youth Venture leaders, Olondis Walker (O-Zone), Jhamel Robinson( J.Million), plus, Aviva Levine, and Clemente Djtwelvz Pena--
and an even more amazing line up of local musicians--folks who are
coming out to create a show that celebrates health, wellness, community
self-sufficiency, green living and climate justice.
Hosted by The Coup’s Boots Riley, the music stages will feature a solar-powered DJ set by Pete Rock, as well as performances by Erk tha Jerk, Nu Dekades, Do D.A.T., Holly Saucy and O-Zone. Maybe London will even show up for a song, who knows?
Along
with music, there's enough green living education and activities to
keep the most demanding person busy: the number of events and activities
being planned by local Green activist and social justice groups for the
festival is legion.
Want to buy a bike-powered smoothie? The Environmental Service Learning Initiative (a program of Global Exchange, which is co-presenting the festival) will sell you one.
More interested in tasting local foods in a booth manned by folks from Mandela Market in West Oakland, or in a demonstration of growing food via aquaponic pond systems demonstrated by West Oakland organization Kijiji Grows? Both groups will be there, along with dozens of social justice groups and community organizations.
In addition, there will be storytelling, poetry, green hip-hop and best of all, a gathering of so many of the community groups working to build environmental awareness, sustainable communities and positive social change in Oakland.
Many of the Oakland Local team will be there as well, along with 500+ expected attendees. How about you?
