Oakland Pride organizers are promising "It's a Celebration" when their annual event recognizing LGBTQ communities returns to downtown Oakland this weekend.

From 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. this Sunday, Sept. 2., more than 50,000 people are expected to attend the event, which will be take over a portion of Franklin Street, between 19th and 21st streets. Four music stages will host a variety of music acts, from classic soul to instrumental Latin music.

Nineties dance music sensation CeCe Peniston will be headlining this year’s event; other performers include Oakland rapper and entrepreneur Clyde Carson of The Team.

The event will feature a family area to include a petting zoo, story area, face painting, book giveaways and arts and crafts. There also is a senior area and accommodations for people with disabilities, including accessible bathrooms in several different locations.

In addition to being inclusive, Oakland Pride is also known for being the most diverse Pride event in Northern California. The Urban Soul stage will feature “African American and African diasporic music styles,” according to the organization's website. In addition to a diverse mix of music, the Urban Soul stage will host the Queer Couture Fashion show. Three other stages featuring music all day are the Pride/Main Stage, the Latin Stage and the Women’s Stage.

Oakland Pride again will feature a Community Health Pavilion, where community organizations will provide information about counseling, HIV testing, AIDS education and other LGBTQ-related health and wellness things. Among the organizations in attendance will be Get Screened Oakland, Pacific Reproductive Services and Gaylesta LGBTQ Psychotherapy association.

Getting to this year’s Oakland Pride couldn’t be easier - the main entrance is right near a 19th Street BART exit. It is also accessible by many AC Transit bus lines including the 1, 72, 51A, 12, 18 and NL. A bike valet also will be available.
